How to Choose a Reference

How to Choose a Reference

When you’re applying for jobs or college programs, choosing the right references can make a big difference. But what is a reference, and why are they so important?

What is a reference?

A reference is someone who can share more about your achievements, education, experience, skills, and character! Essentially, whoever you choose as a reference should be able to vouch for your ability to handle the role or program you’re applying for. They’ll share more about their experience with you.

Why do people ask for a reference or letters of recommendation?

References provide an endorsement or someone who agrees with your abilities and character. They can provide insight beyond what’s on paper, which helps employers, or decision-makers understand your potential to succeed based on real-world examples. It’s always good for the decision-makers to hear from someone besides you about how great you are!

When it comes down to choosing a reference, there are a few different categories you can choose from:

Type of Reference

What is it?

Examples of Who They Are:

Professional References

They’ve seen your work in previous jobs or projects.

They are ready and able to talk about your work ethic and leadership skills.

  • Former manager

  • Mentor

  • Club advisor

  • Someone you’ve worked for before, like a family you’ve babysat for

Personal or Character References

This would be someone who can offer insight into who you are & what makes you - YOU!

They know your personality, values, and character.

  • Coach

  • Club advisor

  • Faculty member

  • Religious leader

Academic Reference

Someone who can speak about you as a student or learner. They can discuss your personal character, ability to achieve results, solve complex problems, and other skills developed in learning environments.

  • Teachers

  • Principals

  • School counselors

You may be thinking, this is my first job application so what do I do if I don’t have a professional reference? Everyone starts somewhere! Use a reference who can speak to your character, abilities, and work ethic. This could be a variety of different people, like a faculty member, someone you’ve volunteered with, or anyone who has seen you in action.

Choosing the right references is important and should be given some thought. By selecting people who can genuinely vouch for your skills, character, and achievements, you enhance your chances of making a strong, good impression. Once you’ve decided who to put as references, use this checklist to ask them!

Whether you’re just starting out or applying to school, the right references can help you stand out and move one step closer to your goals. Good luck with your applications!
